Redesign Team

You may be wondering who is behind the rebuilding of Bridge 9340, the 35W Bridge over the Mississippi River that collapsed on August 1, 2007.  Besides the obvious Mn/DOT, there are three significant companies who play a huge part on the Redesign and Rebuilding of the 35W Bridge.  Let's take a closer look at them:

As you may see, they have previous experience with large bridge projects, and their list of awards backs up their credibility.  Along with Flatiron, Manson Constructions is also working on the new 35W Bridge.

Manson

"Peter Manson, an enterprising Swedish immigrant, put together a floating pile driver just after the turn of the century.  By 1905 he was engaged full-time with the pile driving and waterfront construction scene around Puget Sound.  Through good times and bad, Manson Constructions formed an enviable reputation for good, honest, hard work which was completed in a timely manner. . . . The leadership of the company has been family oriented for 100 years, beginning with Peter Manson, then his son, Harry Manson, then Elmer Edwards, followed by Peter Haug, Glenn Edwards and now ably directed by Chairman E. P. Paup, and President Eric Haug." (Manson Construction - History site, 2008, p. 1) [5]

Manson also has experience in large projects, which include the following [6]:

Marine Constructionmanson_marine_construction_dredging manson_marine_construction_dredging

"Wharfs, piers, terminals, marinas, bridges and more — Manson has been in the marine construction business for more than 100 years, and our experience shows. Nobody beats Manson’s reliability as a prime contractor for a wide range of project types."

Dredging

dredging_manson_marine_construction dredging_manson_marine_construction " With all types of bottom material, environmental conditions and customer requirements, every dredging project is unique. That’s why maintenance dredging, channel cutting and beach nourishment  require both the right equipment and the depth of experience to get the job done efficiently, safely and cost-effectively."

"Levee projects come with a wide range of specialized requirements — and Manson has seen them all. We work closely with customers to ensure that all environmental issues are addressed and all performance standards are met."

Heavy Lift

heavy_lifing_dredging_manson_marine_construction heavy_lifing_dredging_manson_marine_construction "A large inventory of heavy lifting derricks and cranes with capacities up to 600 tons enables Manson to provide essential dockside lift services. Our engineers and operators are experienced in performing all types of heavy lifts and designing specialized slings and riggings to ensure they’re performed safely."

With their experience, the Flatiron-Manson Joint Venture is a winning team.   Another team player should not be forgotten, which is FIGG.

FIGG

"For almost 30 years, FIGG has designed world-class bridges for our customers that advanced the science of engineering and the art of design.  Focusing on unique solutions, we created distinctive landmarks that express the spirit of the communities and environments they serve, while saving money for our customers and setting enduring records for engineering achievement. . . . FIGG is solely dedicated to bridges. . . . The FIGG Team's passion for creating bridges as art has provided our customers with over 260 design awards."  (Figg Engineering Group - Company Information Firm History site, 2008, p. 1) [7]

These three (Flatiron, Manson, and FIGG) along with Mn/DOT are working hard to rebuild a bridge that is beautiful, stronger, and better than ever.  The 35W Bridge has been a major artery and important transportation lifeline to Minnesotans and visitors.  By December 24, 2008, we will welcome back Bridge 9340, the rebuilt 35W Bridge over the magnificent Mississippi River.
