Design Selection
There are many design components to a bridge including color and lighting. As mentioned previously, the new 35W Bridge was designed to be aesthetically pleasing and fit in with its environment. Detailed features of the new bridge include [1]:
-
Bridge pier
-
Retaining walls
-
Gateway Monuments
-
Railing
-
Bridge color
-
Bridge lighting
The following is a more detailed look of each new bridge feature:
Bridge Pier
Pier Shape
"The pier shape is reflective curves with the dominant curve shaping along the length of the bridge, tapering from 30' to 11' to 30'. (11' depth at the center of the main span over the river). This pier shape is about the form and tying a continuous curve directly into the superstructure, while framing the river. The proportions reflect strength and elegance in their unique design. Two main piers features observation platforms curved along the river's edge. The superstructure concrete box girder is a closed shape with inclined walls and smooth surfaces of continuous flat planes. The appearance underneath is a sweeping form with the shape and concrete material creating a visually clean and quiet space below the bridge." (Mn/DOT I-35W Bridge pier graphic, 2008, p. 1) [2]
Global View
"A functional sculptural bridge reflecting a series of modern arch forms softly set into the context of the site to maximize openness, light and green space, while focusing on the river. River span sweeps 504' in a parabolic curve of graceful proportions. The pier shape of Concept A creates reflection of curved forms with continuous movement into the bridge superstructure. Strength and elegance combine for a 70' tall pier." (Mn/DOT I-35W St. Anthony Falls Bridge - Visualization site, 2008, p. 1) [3]
Retaining Walls
"Gabain Wall Native Mississippi River Valley stone retaining walls were selected." (Mn/DOT Interstate 35W Bridge - Rebuild design choices site, 2008, p. 1) [4]
An artist rendering includes "various layers of native stone creating a geologic profile of stone alone the Mississippi River." (Mn/DOT Interstate 35W Bridge - Gabion Wall site, 2008, p. 1) [5]
There will be 20'-25' tall walls at the south end of the bridge and 16'-26' tall walls at the north end of the bridge. (Mn/DOT Interstate 35W Bridge - Wall Locations site, 2008, p. 1) [6]
Gateway Monuments
Gateway Monuments design are still in the works. Comments and feedback were provided to the designers, which will guide in their finalize designs for the entranceways of the bridge where the momuments will be. (Mn/DOT Interstate 35W Bridge - Rebuild design choices site, 2008, p. 1) [7]
Railing
Fully open railings were selected. (Mn/DOT Interstate 35W Bridge - Rebuild design choices site/Railing, 2008, p. 1) [8]
Railing locations include inside railing dividing northbound and southbound outside railings. (Mn/DOT Interstate 35W Bridge - Rail Locations site, 2008, p. 1) [9]
Railing materials include concrete and tubular steel which consists of hot dipped galvanized coating, epoxy intermediate coating, and polyurethane top coating. (Mn/DOT Interstate 35W Bridge - Rail Materials site, 2008, p. 1) [10]
Color
White bridge color was selected. (Mn/DOT Interstate 35W Bridge - Rebuild design choices site/Color, 2008, p. 1) [11]
It includes a concrete coating for uniform smooth color and anti-graffiti clear coating. (Mn/DOT Interstate 35W Bridge - Color concrete coating site, 2008, p. 1) [12]
Lighting
The Visual Quality Advisory Team will make a final decision on the lighting. (Mn/DOT I-35W St. Anthony Falls Bridge - Visualization/Lighting site, 2008, p. 1) [13]
How the selections came to be: "Residents, business and community members, representatives from the parks, preservation and arts communities, as well as various elected and appointed officials from local, state and federal governments voted at a community workshop on various aspects of the bridge design including pier shape, lighting and color." (Mn/DOT Interstate 35W Bridge - Rebuild design choices site, 2008, p. 1) [14]
